At Data Doctors, Ken Colburn compares Google’s 5G offerings to help you decide which phone is for you.
Q: I’m ready for a 5G phone and I am comparing the Google Pixel 4a to a 5G vs Pixel 5 – is Pixel 5 worth the difference?
A: As 5G coverage continues to grow, it’s becoming more appealing to switch to a phone that can enjoy higher speeds.
Every major manufacturer now offers a 5G-enabled smartphone, so the range of options has become quite extensive.
The Pixel 4a with 5G sells for $ 499 while the Pixel 5 sells for $ 699, so the features you’re interested in will determine if it’s worth the extra $ 200.
One of the most important features of today’s smartphones is camera technology, and when it comes to these two devices, everything is actually the same.
They both have 12.2-megapixel (standard), 16-megapixel (ultra-wide) rear cameras and 8-megapixel front-facing cameras. Both shoot 4K video at 30/60 frames per second, and both offer excellent Night Vision, AI-powered low-light technology, and video stabilization.
Both devices have upgraded battery capacity from previous models and are very similar in size.
The Pixel 4a (5G) has a 3,800 mAh battery, while the Pixel 5 has a 4,000 mAh capacity. By comparison, the similarly sized iPhone 12 only offers 2,815 mAh, but the mAh rating alone will not determine the battery life.
The size and technology used for the screen are also big factors, as the larger the screen, the more power it takes. The 4a (5G) has a slightly larger screen (6.2 inches versus 6 inches) and a slightly smaller battery, so there may be a slight difference in battery life.
Storage (128 gigabytes) and processor (Snapdragon 765G) are the same on both but Pixel 5 has more RAM (8 gigabytes and 6 gigabytes). Extra RAM can be important if you tend to use lots of apps and data at the same time.
If you haven’t been to a wireless Bluetooth headset yet and want to use a traditional wired headset, it is the only one with a 4a (5G) headphone jack.
Pixel 5 display has 90 hertz refresh rate at 60 hertz instead of 4a (5G), so animation and video will be smoother. While both have the same resolution (2340 × 1080), the Pixel 5 has a higher pixel count per inch on a slightly smaller screen, so it will be a bit sharper.
If size and weight are important, the Pixel 5 will be slightly smaller in your hand and a little lighter (0.6 ounces).
Wireless charging is also only available on Pixel 5.
For most users, the Pixel 4a (5G) will be one of the best values in a mid-priced 5G phone right now.
Big reason to consider Pixel phones
Since taking lots of photos and videos is a common activity, we all run into the same problem: where do we store them all.
Both Apple and Google are offering their customers free limited storage in the hope that they will start paying for extra space in the future.
Currently, Google Pixel owners have unlimited high-resolution storage via Google Photos, but rumors are that this may not be the case with future models.
