Mountain View tech giant Google will pay more than $ 2.5 million to resolve allegations of discrimination against Asian and female employees and job candidates in software engineering positions. The Department of Labor announced the deal to be paid to more than 5,500 current employees and job applicants in operations in Seattle and Kirkland, Wash, as well as for some of Google’s locations in California.
The department said it has identified wage inequalities that discriminate against women in engineering positions at San Francisco and Sunnyvale locations, as well as differences in recruitment rates for female applicants and Asians.
Officials from the Department’s Federal Contract Compliance Programs Office reached an agreement with Google. A copy of the contract reviewed by The Chronicle said Google has not accepted that it violated any laws as part of the agreement, and the office has not concluded any breach. The company has agreed to review its policies on hiring and payment as part of the contract.
The deal will see Google pay past wages and interest of more than $ 1.3 million to 2,565 female employees in engineering jobs at the company.
The company will also distribute more than $ 1.2 million in refunds and interest to 1,757 women and 1,219 Asian applicants for unemployed software engineering positions.
Google said the company has invested heavily in making its recruiting and payment processes as fair as possible.
