Parody Facebook page for the Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Office causing confusion for online users

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – Searching for Trempealeau County Sheriff on Facebook will provide two similar results, “Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Office“The official page of law enforcement and”Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Office.“, A parody page.

An anonymous user launched the parody page in June 2020 to express his disappointment for law enforcement, including the sheriff’s office.

It’s funny to make fun of them. I think that’s what most people want to say but they can’t do it because they’re going to be harassed, ”says the page owner in an interview with WEAU. The page owner wanted his identity to be kept secret.

The parody and satire page is marked as such and uses an edited version of the Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Office logo.

“I don’t feel like we’re faking them. It’s just unwilling and funny, and if someone gets confused, I’d say hey, you have the wrong page.”

Sheriff Brett Semingson declined to comment to WEAU, but a post on the Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Office page warns users about the other fake page.

The parody page often interacts with the posts on the official law enforcement page, causing many users to acknowledge the confusion between the two, but the page owner says it is a way of expressing freedom of expression.

“This doesn’t mean intimidating anyone or having any malicious intent,” says the page owner. I have nothing against the sheriff or sheriff department. This is just so much fun. “

However, Dana Wachs, a trial lawyer at GT&W Lawyers, says freedom of expression has its limits.

“If you’re not a police officer, you can’t tell people you are a cop. You are not allowed to do this. Where these lines lie, it’s entirely something the courts will decide, and it’s surprisingly complex, some cases that deal with these issues, ”says Wachs. “There is a limit to what people can do. Usually these restrictions apply, whether on the Internet or in the town square. “

The page owner says that the Sheriff did not arrive and will be open to editing the page to reduce confusion if desired.
