It will be an important inflation measure that stands out in the economic data of the week. On Wednesday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the January consumer price index. Except for volatile food and energy prices, the economist consensus is for an increase of 1.5% year on year.
Other publications this week include the National Federation of Independent Business’s Small Business Optimism Index on Tuesday and the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment index on Friday. It seems that both hold steady or slightly up from previous months’ readings.
Federal Reserve observers will also hear from President Jerome Powell in front of the New York Economy Club on Wednesday.

National Federation of Independent Business published the Small Business Optimism Index for January. Consensus estimate, 97Reading above the December 95.9 figure. The December reading was the lowest since last May. “Small businesses are concerned about the potential new economic policy and the increased spread of Covid-19 in the new administration,” says Bill Dunkelberg, NFIB chief economist.
Labor Office Statistics published the Job Opportunities and Workforce Turnover Survey for December. Expectations were set at 6.6 million job postings on the last business day of December, compared to 6.5 million in November.

Bureau of Labor Statistics It announced the consumer price index for January. Economists forecast a 1.5% year-over-year increase for both CPI and core CPI, excluding variable food and energy prices.

Ministry of Labor It reports the first applications for unemployment for the week ending February 6. Unemployment claims increased by an average of 835,000 per week in January, equal to December and nearly 100,000 per week compared to November. Most of the increase is due to job closures from the still high level of Covid-19 cases.
Friday 2/12
Enbridge and Moody’s hold conference calls to discuss quarterly results.
Michigan University February announced the Consumer Confidence index. The consensus estimate is for 79.5 readings, even with roughly January data.
